SEA 3 - Technology transfer Hits: 1146

Many of the partners involved in the Evoltree Network have experience from former EU projects (biotechnology and environment programmes of FP3 to FP5) (developing universal molecular systems, calculating trade-offs between different tools, supporting the development of industrial kits, testing the latter in beta-experiments). However, these efforts were mainly scattered so far, and only exceptionally ended up with a transfer of technologies or results in economic added value.

The SEA3’s objectives include several aspects of technological and industrial relevance such as gene identification that can be transferred to programs for ecosystem monitoring, breeding and arboriculture, or commercial bioinformatics. For this purpose, Evoltree will establish a platform for technology transfer.

The activity SEA3 will result in:

  • Identification of new technologies in the Evoltree network that have perspectives for transfer to potential end users, companies and industries

  • Identification of potential end users, companies and industries with interest on the identified new technologies

  • Organisation of workshops and meetings to initiate and stimulate contacts between Evoltree members with new technologies and potential end users, companies and industries

  • Pre-marketing technology development and commercialisation.

The strategy adopted by Evoltree consists of looking the highest possible level of intellectual property management. In several key industries and especially in biotechnology, the patent system has created ‘patent thickets’: an overlapping set of patent rights requiring that those seeking to commercialize new technology obtain licenses from multiple patentees.

Pooling the patents own by partners that are necessary to exploit a given product is an effective method to cut through the patent thickets. Joint management of intellectual property will additionally allow partners to protect and ensure public research will of keeping humanitarian purposes or collective welfare from exclusive licensing.
